TMJ disorders explained: the hidden source of jaw pain and headaches

A sore jaw when you wake up, clicks or pops when you chew, frequent tension headaches: these scattered symptoms often trace back to a single source, a TMJ disorder (also called TMD, or temporomandibular joint dysfunction). Your temporomandibular joints connect your jaw to your skull, and when they're stressed or misaligned, the trouble frequently shows up far from the joint itself.

Because those joints influence so much, TMJ disorders can produce a surprisingly wide range of symptoms, from jaw pain and earaches to headaches, neck pain, and even disturbed sleep. This video explains what's happening inside the joint to cause them. Many people never connect the dots until a dentist points out the patterns of wear that grinding has left on their teeth.

So what triggers it? Common causes include nighttime teeth grinding (bruxism), stress, bite misalignment, and joint injury. The encouraging news is that most cases respond well to conservative TMJ treatment without needing surgery, often just a custom night guard, jaw exercises, or a bite adjustment. Catching TMJ disorders early also heads off the more serious problems they cause over time, including cracked teeth and gum recession.

If any of these symptoms sound familiar, please don't wait. At Way Dental, we evaluate your bite, check for wear patterns, and discuss treatment options tailored to the underlying cause.
