Stop gum disease with a deep cleaning: scaling and root planing at Way Dental

When bacteria and tartar build up below the gumline where a standard cleaning can't reach, your regular hygiene visit isn't enough. That's the job of a "deep cleaning," known clinically as scaling and root planing: a targeted treatment for early-to-moderate gum disease that protects your long-term oral health. This video shows exactly what happens during the procedure and why it matters.

The procedure itself is more comfortable than the name suggests. Local anesthesia keeps you at ease throughout while your hygienist uses specialized instruments to remove hardened plaque (tartar) from below the gum tissue, then smooths the root surfaces so your gums can reattach.

Treating it at this stage is a major win for your smile. Left alone, the bacteria behind gum disease keep attacking the bone that supports your teeth, eventually causing mobility and tooth loss. Scaling and root planing stops that progression and often lets the gum tissue heal back to a healthy state.

Has your hygienist recommended a deep cleaning? Watch this video so you know exactly what to expect. At Way Dental, we typically schedule deep cleanings over one or two visits, then follow up with more frequent maintenance visits to keep gum disease from returning.
